We are

Separation & Filtration Specialists

We started our business offering services centred around the treatment and conditioning of drilling mud for the oil and gas industry in the North Sea.

Through a process of diversification and evolution, whilst still very much involved with solids control, we now carry out the processing of hazardous industrial waste streams and wastewater for a growing range of energy and industrial customers.

Our expertise and technologies are currently deployed across geographic and industrial borders where we have become the industrial separation & filtration partners of choice for some of the world's biggest organisations.

This diversification has seen our company evolve from Solids Control Services into Separo. Throughout our journey, we have remained an independently owned business.

The Challenge

Separo was approached by a new client to support a three well plug & abandonment project.

What we did

We provided water treatment on residual fluids from the well, allowing much of the waste to be treated at source and discharged overboard from the Subsea Construction Vessel.

Separo’s scope of supply was;

  • SepSORB® filter vessels x 4 (2 x operational, and 2 x standby).
  • Containerised air driven pump system.
  • Hoses and connections for our equipment.
  • Filtration Specialists x 2, for 24 hour operation.

This system was setup with a capacity to process up to 40 m3/hr. As these systems are designed and supplied to be ‘plug & play’ the rig up is quick and safe.

The two standby SepSORB® filter vessels provided flexibility and reassurance in the case of higher processing volumes and flow rates.

Value Gained

Hydrocarbon contaminated fluid was cleaned through the SepSORB® filter vessels and discharged overboard, well below our target 20ppm (OSPAR guidelines maximum 30ppm). The 2 x standby vessels were not required and were returned to the fleet for the next project.

Our client was able to save significant deck space as storage tanks for these fluids were not required on board.

Enabling our customer to treat these fluids at source and discharge overboard lowered the environmental impact of the project and significantly reduced costs by removing the requirement to process and dispose of these fluids onshore.

Benefits

  • Plug & play system with no media handling, safer for platform personnel.
  • Water treated at source reducing transport costs, disposal costs and emissions.
  • System can be scaled up to suit client requirements, capable of handling higher flow rates and more highly contaminated fluids.
  • OIW levels in excess of 1000ppm successfully treated.
  • Easy to access sample points located on the inlet and outlet of the SepSORB® Filter Vessel.
  • The SepSORB® Filter Media can also be recycled and reused, subject to certain contamination limits, resulting in zero waste for landfill.
